China's National Health Commission (NHC) on January 18 hosted the national work conference on women and children's health. The event was held in Beijing. Yu Yanhong, Secretary of the Leading Party (Communist Party of China) Group of the State Administration of Traditional Chinese Medicine, spoke during the conference.
Yu said, given China's constant efforts to improve women and children's health in recent years, China's maternal mortality rate and infant mortality rate in 2018 fell by 18.3 per 100,000 and 6.1 per 1,000, respectively. China's infant and child (aged five and under) mortality rate dropped to 8.4 per 1,000.
Commission officials highlighted the Chinese Government's achievements in improving women and children's health during the past year. The officials also analyzed the opportunities and challenges China has faced as it has improved women and children's health. In addition, the officials outlined the commission's plans to prevent and cure birth defects, and to improve healthcare services for women and children.
